Defibrillators Market Report Highlights: What the Numbers Really Say

The global defibrillators market was valued at USD 7.3 billion in 2023. It is estimated at USD 9.2 billion for 2026 and projected to reach USD 13.7 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 8.1% from 2024 to 2030. North America led with a 42.1% revenue share in 2023.

Market Overview and Growth Drivers

How big is the defibrillators market, and how fast is it growing?

Between the 2023 base of USD 7.3 billion and the 2030 forecast of USD 13.7 billion, the market adds about USD 6.4 billion in absolute value. The 2026 estimate of USD 9.2 billion means roughly USD 4.5 billion of that arrives in the final four years. That growth is not driven by one product cycle. It comes from a rising disease burden, an aging population, and a steady stream of new devices.

What is driving demand?

Grand View Research points to four core forces, each with its own evidence:

  • Sudden cardiac arrest incidence: The American Heart Association reported cardiovascular disease was responsible for roughly 19.0 million global deaths. The CDC noted about 695,000 U.S. deaths from heart disease in 2021, or 1 in every 5 deaths.
  • An aging population: About 54.1 million Americans (16.3%) are aged 65 or above, and this group is more vulnerable to conditions that require defibrillation.
  • Public awareness and policy support: Government and healthcare-organization initiatives are widening access to devices and training.
  • Product development: Companies keep bringing new architectures to market, which keeps replacement and upgrade demand alive.

Canada shows the same pattern. Approximately 2.6 million adults aged 20 and over, or 1 in 12, have been diagnosed with heart disease.

Why does North America lead, and where is Asia Pacific heading?

North America's 42.1% share reflects a high heart disease burden, an aging population, a strong base of industry players, and well-developed healthcare infrastructure. Asia Pacific is expected to grow substantially, driven by sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and an aging population. The region's burden is uneven. High-income Asia Pacific recorded 76.6 CVD deaths per 1 lakh people, the lowest age-standardized rate, while Central Asia recorded 516.9. That spread suggests demand will not rise evenly, and access to procedures will matter as much as disease prevalence.

COVID-19 was a reminder of how tied the market is to hospital activity. ICD sales fell in 2020 and recovered as elective surgeries resumed, while Nihon Kohden still reported strong defibrillator sales growth that year.

Market Segmentation

Where the money sits and where the growth sits are two different places. This is the most useful lens for the market, and it is easy to miss when the segments are read separately.

The value base: ICDs and hospitals

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) held over 52.0% of the market in 2023. Hospitals held over 79.0% of end-use revenue because of the volume of cardiac cases and surgeries performed there. Demand for implants is still rising. Boston Scientific reported about 659,000 ICDs distributed globally by January 2021, up 59,000 from the 600,000 distributed by January 2020.

Within ICDs, the report separates subcutaneous (S-ICD) from transvenous (T-ICD) systems. The T-ICD group is further split into single chamber, dual chamber, and CRT-D devices.

The growth engine: external devices and public access

External defibrillators are expected to register the fastest growth from 2024 to 2030, helped by technology advances and programs that put AEDs in public places. They cover three types: manual, automated, and wearable cardioverter defibrillators. On the end-use side, the public access market is expected to record the fastest CAGR over the same period. Awareness campaigns, AEDs placed in high-traffic spaces, personnel training, and public access defibrillation programs all aim at faster response to cardiac emergencies.

Hospitals dominate revenue today, but less than 21% of value sits outside them. That smaller slice is where the fastest growth is expected. End-use also includes pre-hospital, alternate care, and home healthcare settings.

The home is the newest frontier

In May 2021, Australia's Rapid Response Revival Research received a CE mark for CellAED, described as the world's first personal AED for home use. In March 2023, Safe Life acquired Coro Medical and AED.us to broaden the availability of life-saving equipment across the U.S. Both moves point the same way, toward devices that live closer to where arrests actually happen.

Key Industry Players

Who competes in the defibrillators market?

Grand View Research profiles ten companies: Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific, BIOTRONIK, MicroPort Scientific, Philips, Stryker, ZOLL Medical (Asahi Kasei), Nihon Kohden, and Schiller. The market is described as intensely competitive, with players relying on product development, regional expansion, partnerships, and mergers and acquisitions.

What are the leaders doing right now?

The clearest pattern is a race toward less invasive implants. In August 2022, Medtronic reported that its investigational EV ICD system met its trial endpoints. The device places its lead outside the heart and veins, beneath the sternum, to reduce risks tied to traditional transvenous ICDs. In April 2026, Medtronic followed with one-year real-world results from the Enlighten post-approval registry for its Aurora EV-ICD system. The results showed effective defibrillation, high anti-tachycardia pacing success, low rates of chronic system-related major complications, and an improved rate of inappropriate shocks.

Abbott is entering the same space. In January 2026 it announced a collaboration with AtaCor Medical to develop a next-generation extravascular ICD. Boston Scientific started its MODULAR ATP trial in December 2021 to evaluate the mCRM Modular Therapy System, which includes the EMBLEM MRI subcutaneous defibrillator.

Regional growth stories add another layer. MicroPort reported 95% revenue growth in the first half of 2021 in China's cardiac rhythm management market, backed by its portfolio and pipeline.

Competition is shifting from selling more devices to redesigning where and how the device sits in the body. With Medtronic and Abbott both investing in extravascular ICDs in 2026, clinical evidence and real-world safety data are becoming the differentiators.
