Occupational therapy focuses more broadly on helping people perform everyday activities. The distinction becomes clearer when looking at a practical example. Suppose someone has suffered a stroke and has difficulty walking and using one arm. Someone primarily experiencing difficulty with movement may benefit from physical therapy, while someone struggling with everyday tasks may benefit from occupational therapy. In many rehabilitation programs, coordinated care can be useful.

Occupational therapists may also assess the home, workplace, or school environment. They can suggest practical adjustments to improve independence and safety. Physical therapists, meanwhile, may develop individualized exercise programs designed to improve mobility and physical performance.

Neither therapy should be viewed as universally better than the other. They serve different purposes and can complement one another.

A healthcare professional can help determine which type of rehabilitation is appropriate based on symptoms, diagnosis, functional limitations, and personal goals.

Understanding occupational therapy vs physical therapy can make it easier for patients and families to ask informed questions about rehabilitation. Both approaches can play an important role in helping individuals regain abilities, adapt to changes, and participate more confidently in daily life.
