People with diabetes should inspect their feet regularly. Looking between the toes and around the soles can help identify problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. A mirror can be useful for areas that are difficult to see.

Footwear should fit comfortably without creating pressure points. Socks should also be appropriate for the individual's needs. People with diabetes should avoid attempting to cut away corns, calluses, or damaged skin themselves without professional advice.

If a sore develops, medical evaluation is recommended, particularly if it is not healing. Treatment may involve professional wound care, pressure reduction, management of infection, and assessment of circulation.

Maintaining blood glucose levels according to an individual's treatment plan can also support overall health. Smoking cessation, when applicable, may benefit circulation, while regular medical checkups can help identify complications early.

Certain symptoms require urgent attention. These include rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, severe infection symptoms, fever, foul-smelling drainage, or tissue that becomes dark or black.

The goal of managing diabetic sores is not simply to treat an existing wound but also to prevent future injuries. Regular foot checks, appropriate footwear, professional examinations, and careful diabetes management can all contribute to better skin and foot health.
