Diabetic Sores: Recognizing Wounds and Protecting Skin Health

Diabetic sores can be more difficult to heal than ordinary cuts or minor injuries. Diabetes may affect circulation, nerve function, immunity, and the body's ability to repair damaged tissue. For this reason, people with diabetes should pay close attention to changes in their skin, especially on their feet and lower legs.

A diabetic sore may start with a small blister, scratch, pressure area, or cut. If sensation is reduced because of neuropathy, the person may not immediately notice the injury. Repeated pressure from shoes or walking can make the wound worse.

Poor circulation may further slow healing. In addition, high blood glucose levels can affect several processes involved in immune function and tissue repair.

Recognizing diabetic sores early is important. Symptoms can include an open wound, redness, swelling, drainage, changes in skin color, or an area that remains irritated for an extended period.

People with diabetes should inspect their feet regularly. Looking between the toes and around the soles can help identify problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. A mirror can be useful for areas that are difficult to see.

Footwear should fit comfortably without creating pressure points. Socks should also be appropriate for the individual's needs. People with diabetes should avoid attempting to cut away corns, calluses, or damaged skin themselves without professional advice.

If a sore develops, medical evaluation is recommended, particularly if it is not healing. Treatment may involve professional wound care, pressure reduction, management of infection, and assessment of circulation.

Maintaining blood glucose levels according to an individual's treatment plan can also support overall health. Smoking cessation, when applicable, may benefit circulation, while regular medical checkups can help identify complications early.

Certain symptoms require urgent attention. These include rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, severe infection symptoms, fever, foul-smelling drainage, or tissue that becomes dark or black.

The goal of managing diabetic sores is not simply to treat an existing wound but also to prevent future injuries. Regular foot checks, appropriate footwear, professional examinations, and careful diabetes management can all contribute to better skin and foot health.

Anyone with diabetes who notices a persistent or worsening wound should contact a healthcare professional rather than relying solely on home treatment.
