Carbon Sequestration: The "S" in CCS

The ultimate goal of carbon capture and storage is the permanent removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, a process known as carbon sequestration. This involves transporting captured CO2 and injecting it deep underground into suitable geological formations, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers, where it can be safely stored for millennia. Analysis presented by Market Research Future shows that the development of secure, large-scale sequestration capacity is a critical bottleneck and a major area of investment.

The Geology of Storage

Carbon sequestration relies on specific geological conditions. Suitable storage sites are typically porous rock formations, like sandstone, capped by an impermeable layer of rock, like shale, which traps the CO2 underground. There are three primary types of storage reservoirs:

  1. Depleted Oil and Gas Reservoirs: These are well-characterized and have proven their ability to trap fluids over geological time. They often offer existing infrastructure (wells, pipelines) that can be repurposed.

  2. Deep Saline Aquifers: These are porous rock formations filled with saltwater. They offer the largest storage capacity globally and are widely distributed, but they require more extensive characterization.

  3. Unmineable Coal Seams: CO2 can be injected into coal seams, where it is adsorbed onto the coal, displacing methane that can be produced as an energy source.

The North American market is anchored by the Gulf Coast's mature pipeline network and extensive sequestration geology, while Europe is developing cross-border CO2 transport agreements to access North Sea storage, exemplified by the Northern Lights project.

Infrastructure and Transport

The "S" in CCS is not just about injection; it requires a vast infrastructure network. This includes pipelines to transport CO2 from capture sites to storage locations, and injection wells and monitoring systems at the storage site. The CO2 transport and storage infrastructure buildout is a major driver and opportunity for the market. The U.S. Gulf Coast CCS corridor includes plans for over 3,200 km of dedicated CO2 pipeline, while the Northern Lights project has created an open-access storage service model that multiple industrial emitters can contract into. This shared-infrastructure approach dramatically reduces per-project capital intensity.

Challenges: Permitting and Public Perception

The development of carbon sequestration faces significant hurdles. The lengthy permitting process for Class VI injection wells in the U.S. has been a major bottleneck, although recent EPA primacy delegations to states like Texas are expected to accelerate approvals. Public opposition and storage liability concerns, including induced seismicity and long-term containment liability, have delayed or terminated projects in some regions. Addressing these concerns through transparent monitoring, robust regulation, and clear liability frameworks is essential for public acceptance and the continued growth of the Carbon Capture and Storage Market.

Future Outlook

The future of carbon sequestration lies in scaling up injection capacity and developing new storage hubs. The hub-and-cluster platform economics—where multiple emitters share transport and storage infrastructure—are transforming cost structures and attracting new players. The development of cross-border CO2 transport networks in Europe unlocks shared storage resources for landlocked industrial emitters. As the industry moves from single-point projects to networked infrastructure, the capacity for carbon sequestration will grow exponentially. According to Market Research Future, the evolution of the Carbon Capture and Storage Market is intrinsically linked to the successful expansion of permanent, secure geological storage.
