How to Inspect a TMT Delivery at Your Yard: A Dealer’s Practical Guide

Most disputes start at the unloading bay, not the mill. A five-minute inspection protects your margin in Chennai, Trichy, Erode and every other yard.

Step 1: Read the markings and tags

Each bundle should carry the manufacturer’s name, grade, size and the BIS Standard Mark, with a tag giving the cast or lot number. A bundle with missing or mismatched markings should not be accepted.

Step 2: Match the batch certificate to the lot

The test certificate should show the same cast or lot number as the tag, with yield, tensile and elongation results. Check the figures against IS 1786:2008: for Fe 550, at least 550 N/mm² yield, 585 tensile and 10% elongation.

Step 3: Weigh a sample

The standard permits batch mass tolerance of ±7% up to 10 mm, ±5% from 12 to 16 mm and ±3% above 16 mm. Compare your weighed bundle with the manufacturer’s weight chart. For example, Sri Durga publishes 0.580–0.590 kg/m for 10 mm bars, against the textbook 0.617 kg/m, which sits inside the tolerance. Confirm that you are billed on actual weighbridge weight, not theoretical weight.

Step 4: Look at the surface

Light surface rust from transit is normal, but flaking rust or pitting is not. See the Concrete Centre’s guidance on reinforcement rust for how to judge it. A bar that has lost section is a rejection.

Step 5: Check ribs and straightness

Ribs should be uniform and bars straight, with no cracks near ends or bends.

Step 6: Record and photograph

Keep delivery photos, challans and certificates for each lot. They settle disputes quickly.

Why this matters when you choose a manufacturer

Brands that publish weight charts and supply batch certificates with each dispatch make this inspection faster. Sri Durga TMT’s buyer guide answers common questions on certificates and checks, and its Fe 550 range from 8 to 32 mm ships from Kuppam and Kanchipuram to dealers in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Salem, among others.

FAQs

Q1. What if the bundle is a little underweight? Compare it with the published chart and the standard’s tolerance before raising a dispute.

Q2. Can I accept bars with light rust? Light surface rust is usually acceptable; flaking or pitting is not.

Q3. Who keeps the certificates? Keep a copy yourself and give one to the buyer.

Q4. Should I test every lot? For large or critical orders, an independent lab test is worthwhile.
