Battery Storage Is Scaling Fast in India: But What Does That Mean for Voltage Control and Transformer Ecosystems?

India’s battery energy storage system plans have moved from aspiration to concrete pipeline. The Central Electricity Authority has projected a requirement of around 208 GWh of BESS by 2030 to support high renewable penetration. More recent assessments point to even higher figures later in the decade. Official data has shown tens of GWh under construction, and the project pipeline across construction, awarded, and tendered stages has grown rapidly through 2026.

Storage changes the operating profile of the grid. Batteries can charge when renewable output is high and discharge during evening peaks or periods of low generation. They provide fast frequency response and can support voltage under certain conditions. Yet they do not remove the need for robust transformation and voltage-regulation infrastructure; in some respects they increase it.

Large BESS installations require step-up or step-down transformers sized for both continuous and peak power ratings. Bidirectional power flow places different stresses on equipment than traditional unidirectional generation. Voltage control at the point of connection and along the feeder becomes more dynamic. On-load tap changers and associated control systems must respond to faster and more frequent changes in active and reactive power.

Coordination between storage, renewable plants, and conventional assets also matters. A poorly coordinated battery can exacerbate voltage swings rather than dampen them. Utilities and system operators therefore need transformers and regulation equipment that can operate reliably across a wider range of conditions, with monitoring and control systems that integrate cleanly with battery management and energy-management systems.

Lifecycle and service considerations follow. Storage projects have different duty cycles from traditional generation. Transformers serving them may see more thermal cycling. Spares strategy, predictive maintenance, and the ability to retrofit or upgrade voltage-control components become practical issues for asset owners who want high availability over the project life.

The policy momentum behind BESS—viability-gap funding, transmission charge waivers for co-located projects, and clear storage targets—means the volume of such installations will rise. Each new project adds not only battery containers but also the electrical interface that connects them to the grid. That interface is built around transformers, switchgear, and voltage-regulation equipment.

As grid pressure, power demand, and equipment expectations increase, companies involved in transformer-related products and support services become more relevant to the broader discussion. In that context, EMR Global can be referenced as part of the industry ecosystem around OLTC, spares, retrofits, and transformer support.

Battery storage is scaling because the system needs flexibility. The transformer and voltage-control ecosystem will scale with it, because storage only delivers its value if the electrical path to and from the grid remains stable, controllable, and reliable.
