India’s power system is undergoing significant modernization as electricity demand rises, renewable generation expands, and transmission networks become more complex. Maintaining stable voltage and managing reactive power are increasingly important for reliable grid operation. Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) are emerging as an important grid-support technology because they can provide rapid voltage regulation and dynamic reactive power compensation across transmission and distribution networks.

A comprehensive assessment by Markntel Advisor reveals that the India STATCOM sector is valued at USD 109.64 million in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 229.78 million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 13.10% during 2026–2032. Electric Utilities represent the leading end-user segment. The India STATCOM market report evaluates the sector by power capacity and applications including voltage regulation, grid stabilization, reactive power compensation, and related functions.

Renewable Energy Increases Grid Stability Requirements

India’s rapid renewable-energy expansion is creating new requirements for voltage management and grid flexibility. Solar and wind generation can vary according to weather and operating conditions, creating additional challenges for balancing and maintaining stable electrical parameters.

The Ministry of Power reported in 2026 that the government is addressing increasing renewable penetration through transmission strengthening, forecasting, grid-operation reforms, and energy storage. It also noted that STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are being considered and deployed for voltage stability and dynamic grid response. These developments are detailed in the government assessment of renewable-energy impacts on grid stability.

Electric Utilities Remain Key Users

Electric utilities require technologies capable of maintaining voltage levels and improving network performance as electricity flows become more dynamic. STATCOM systems can respond rapidly to changes in reactive power requirements, making them relevant for substations, transmission corridors, renewable-energy pooling stations, and other critical grid locations.

The strong position of electric utilities as the leading end-user segment reflects their central role in transmission and distribution infrastructure. As grid operators expand networks and connect new generation capacity, dynamic compensation equipment can support voltage control without relying exclusively on conventional network reinforcement.

Understanding Reactive Power Compensation

Reactive power is associated with the magnetic and electric fields required by many AC electrical systems. Although it does not directly represent useful energy consumption in the same way as active power, inadequate reactive-power management can contribute to voltage instability and inefficient power-system operation.

STATCOMs use power-electronic converters to rapidly inject or absorb reactive power according to grid conditions. This allows them to support voltage regulation and respond dynamically to disturbances. India's power-sector planning increasingly recognizes such technologies as part of modern grid-support infrastructure.

Transmission Expansion Supports Technology Adoption

India is expanding transmission capacity to accommodate growing electricity demand and increasing renewable generation. The government's 2026 assessment states that the transmission network is planned to increase from 5.09 lakh circuit kilometres in June 2026 to 6.48 lakh circuit kilometres by 2032, while transformation capacity is expected to rise from 1,478 GVA to 2,345 GVA. Advanced devices including STATCOMs are being incorporated into this modernization effort.

The National Electricity Plan's transmission framework also describes STATCOMs as technologies that can provide dynamic voltage support and reactive power compensation, particularly as renewable generation becomes more prominent.

Renewable Pooling Stations Need Dynamic Support

Renewable-energy pooling stations consolidate electricity from multiple generation projects before transferring it into the wider transmission network. Because renewable output can change quickly, these locations may require additional voltage-support capabilities.

The Central Electricity Authority has previously identified dynamic reactive-power compensation through SVC and STATCOM systems as an important measure at renewable-energy pooling stations. Such equipment can help manage reactive-power flows and support voltage conditions when renewable generation fluctuates.

Power Capacity Shapes Application Requirements

The India sector is segmented by power capacity into low capacity below 20 MVAR, medium capacity from 20 MVAR to 100 MVAR, and high capacity above 100 MVAR. MVAR, or megavolt-ampere reactive, is a unit used to measure reactive-power capacity.

Different network conditions require different compensation capabilities. Smaller systems may be suitable for localized voltage-support requirements, whereas higher-capacity installations can address substantial reactive-power needs at major transmission substations and renewable-energy integration points.

Grid Modernization Broadens the Opportunity

India's grid modernization program increasingly combines STATCOMs with other technologies, including synchronous condensers, Flexible AC Transmission System devices, energy storage, forecasting systems, and advanced monitoring. The Ministry of Power stated that state-of-the-art STATCOM and Static VAR Compensator installations are being deployed to dynamically adjust reactive-power flows and maintain stable voltage levels.

This integrated approach is particularly relevant as the grid accommodates a greater share of inverter-based renewable generation and large electricity loads. Coordinating voltage support, transmission capacity, storage, and real-time monitoring can strengthen overall system resilience.

Outlook for India’s STATCOM Sector

The projected expansion from USD 109.64 million in 2026 to USD 229.78 million by 2032 reflects the growing role of dynamic grid-support technologies in India's evolving electricity system. Renewable integration, transmission expansion, increasing electricity demand, and grid modernization are strengthening requirements for advanced voltage-management solutions.

As India continues developing a more flexible and renewable-intensive power system, STATCOM technology is expected to remain relevant to voltage regulation, reactive-power management, and grid stabilization. Its deployment alongside storage, synchronous condensers, and other grid technologies can support the transition toward a more resilient and responsive electricity network.
