Local SEO Across London Boroughs Without Creating Doorway Pages

A plumber in Croydon and one in Camden might both appear for a search like "plumber London", yet the person searching rarely wants either. People tend to type the area they live in or the one they are travelling to, and Google responds with results close to that point.

That creates a temptation for service businesses to publish thirty near-identical pages, one per borough, with the area name swapped in. Google's spam policies describe this pattern as doorway pages, and at best it produces thin results.

Decide which areas you actually serve

Make a list of boroughs where you have customers, staff or a physical presence. Check Search Console for queries that already contain borough or neighbourhood names, since impressions there show where Google already links you with a place.

Create a dedicated page only where you can say something true and specific about the area. Group neighbouring boroughs on one page when the offer is identical.

Give each local page its own evidence

•     Real projects or clients in the area, with permission, and photos taken on site

•     Access details for visits, such as the nearest stations, parking rules, and how the ULEZ or Congestion Charge affects a call-out

•     Local conditions that change the work, for example period housing in Islington or listed-building rules in conservation areas

•     Reviews from customers in that area, quoted with their consent

•     The staff who cover that patch, with a short note on their experience

A page built from these ingredients differs from every other borough page by default.

Set up Google Business Profile properly

A business with an office or shop that customers visit can show its address. A business that only travels to customers should hide the address and list the areas it covers.

Choose the primary category carefully, then add secondary ones. Upload photos regularly and reply to reviews, mentioning the area when it fits naturally, because a review that names a neighbourhood adds useful context.

Connect pages and profiles

Link each borough page from an areas-we-cover hub and from the relevant service pages, using descriptive anchors such as "boiler repair in Hackney". Add LocalBusiness structured data to pages describing a location you operate from.

Keep your name, address and phone number identical across your website, profile and main directories. Mismatches between them are a common reason local rankings stall.

Measure by area

Build a Search Console filter for queries containing each borough name and track clicks monthly. In Google Business Profile, review calls and direction requests by period, then compare both with enquiries logged in your CRM by postcode to see which areas pay back.

Reviews that carry local context

Ask for reviews with a short message sent soon after the job, such as "If you have a minute, a Google review mentioning the work and your area helps others nearby find us". Never offer a discount or gift in return, since Google's policies prohibit incentivised reviews.

Reply with specifics. A response that thanks a customer and mentions the type of job and the area gives search engines and future customers more to go on than a generic thank-you.

Mistakes that keep appearing

•     Listing a virtual office or mail drop as the business address, which risks suspension of the profile

•     Buying citations in bulk from low-quality directories that nobody uses

•     Creating pages for boroughs the business does not serve, in the hope of catching extra searches

•     Leaving old opening hours or phone numbers in place after a move or a change in staffing

How long it takes

Profile changes can show results within weeks, while rankings for competitive London terms usually take months. Review progress at 90 days using calls, direction requests and logged enquiries, since rankings alone can mislead when results vary by searcher location.

When to bring in outside help

Local SEO across a city this size involves audits, citations, content and profile management at the same time. When you speak to an SEO agency in London, ask to see local pages they built that rank for place-based queries, and ask how they avoid duplicate content between areas. An answer that amounts to swapping place names is a warning sign.
