Migration Strategy

The migration was planned across four layers: Content, Experience, Functionality, and Platform. This ensured that the team decided what should move before deciding how it should be rebuilt in Umbraco.

1. Content Mapping

A DNN → Umbraco mapping matrix translated pages, properties, modules, media, categories, and URLs into the appropriate Umbraco content structures.

2. Structured Content Migration

Content was extracted, transformed, and loaded into the target model. Validation compared source and target content rather than relying only on successful imports.

3. Module Rationalization

DNN modules were classified as reuse, rebuild, replace, or retire. Important business functionality was rebuilt using Umbraco components and modern application patterns; obsolete functionality was not carried forward.

4. Component & Content Model

Legacy page/module combinations were transformed into structured Umbraco components and blocks where appropriate. This gave editors a cleaner model without forcing the new platform to reproduce the old CMS architecture.
