Surgical Complications: Common Risks, Warning Signs, and Prevention

Understanding surgical complications is an important part of preparing for an operation and recovering safely afterward. Surgery can diagnose, treat, or improve many health conditions, but every procedure carries some degree of risk. The likelihood of complications depends on the type of surgery, a person's overall health, medications, and other individual factors.

Knowing what complications may occur and recognizing warning signs can help patients communicate effectively with their healthcare team.

What Are Surgical Complications?

Surgical complications are unexpected medical problems that occur during or after an operation. Some are relatively minor and temporary, while others require additional treatment, longer hospitalization, or urgent medical attention.

The risk varies considerably between procedures. A minor operation performed on an otherwise healthy person generally has a different risk profile from major surgery involving the heart, abdomen, or multiple organs.

Before surgery, clinicians assess the patient's medical history, current medications, allergies, and relevant health conditions to help identify potential risks.

Common Types of Surgical Complications

Infection: Bacteria can enter the surgical wound or affect deeper tissues. Symptoms may include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, pus, or fever. Some infections develop after the patient has returned home.

Bleeding: A certain amount of bleeding may be expected during surgery, but excessive bleeding can require treatment or a blood transfusion. New or persistent bleeding after discharge should be reported promptly.

Blood clots: Surgery and reduced mobility can increase the risk of blood clots, particularly in the legs. Deep vein thrombosis may cause pain, swelling, warmth, or discoloration in one leg. A clot that travels to the lungs can cause a pulmonary embolism, which is a medical emergency.

Anesthesia-related problems: Some patients experience nausea, vomiting, sore throat, or temporary confusion after anesthesia. Serious reactions are less common but can occur, depending on the patient's health and the anesthetic used.

Damage to nearby structures: During some procedures, nearby organs, nerves, blood vessels, or other tissues may be injured. The risks depend on the anatomy and complexity of the operation.

Delayed wound healing: Certain medical conditions, smoking, poor nutrition, infection, and impaired circulation can affect the body's ability to repair tissue.

Who May Have a Higher Risk?

Factors that can increase surgical risk include diabetes, heart or lung disease, obesity, smoking, poor nutrition, immune-system problems, and certain medications. Older age and the complexity or duration of a procedure may also influence risk.

Having one of these factors does not mean a complication will occur. Instead, it helps the healthcare team plan appropriate precautions and postoperative monitoring.

Patients should provide accurate information about their medical history and medicines, including supplements and nonprescription products.

How Can Complications Be Reduced?

Although complications cannot always be prevented, several measures can help reduce risk.

  • Follow the surgical team's instructions before and after the procedure.

  • Ask which medicines should be continued, adjusted, or temporarily stopped. Never stop prescribed medication without appropriate guidance.

  • Follow instructions about eating and drinking before anesthesia.

  • Keep the surgical wound clean and follow the recommended dressing-care plan.

  • Move around as advised after surgery to support circulation and recovery.

  • Attend follow-up appointments and report new symptoms promptly.

The healthcare team may also recommend antibiotics, blood-clot prevention measures, or specific wound-care procedures depending on the operation.

Warning Signs After Surgery

Contact the surgical team promptly if you notice increasing wound redness, worsening pain, drainage, fever, persistent vomiting, or a wound that opens. Follow the discharge instructions for the correct contact route.

Seek emergency medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or sudden confusion. These symptoms can indicate a serious complication.

What to Discuss Before an Operation

Before surgery, ask about the expected benefits, major risks, alternative treatments, recovery timeline, and signs that require urgent attention. Understanding the plan can reduce uncertainty and help you prepare for recovery.

Surgical complications can be concerning, but careful planning, clear communication, and appropriate follow-up help healthcare teams identify and manage many problems. Every patient should receive advice tailored to their procedure and individual health needs.
