ERP Adoption in India 2026: Key Findings from Bsquare’s Research Report

0
9

Only 34% of Indian SME manufacturers have a fully deployed ERP, according to Bsquare’s Indian Manufacturing ERP Adoption Report 2026. Another 19% use less than half their ERP’s modules, so about 53% have some ERP in place and the rest still run on Tally, Excel or paper. Resistance from staff and management (42%) has overtaken software cost (31%) as the top barrier. Among adopters, the median payback is 22 months.

These numbers come from a survey of 500 factory owners and decision-makers across 12 Indian states, run by Bsquare Solutions, the company behind Pothera ERP.

Regulated, customer-audited sectors adopt first and see faster payback. In the report’s data, industries with weaker adoption also take longer to recover their investment.

What is the biggest barrier to ERP adoption in India?

Mindset is now the top barrier, not cost. In the 2026 survey, 42% of non-adopters and partial adopters named staff and management resistance as a primary barrier. Software cost was named by 31%.

Micro businesses worry about price and skills. Larger SMEs worry about people and process. A vendor’s approach should differ accordingly.

What finally pushes manufacturers to adopt ERP?

GST compliance. 58% of ERP adopters named GST complexity and the e-invoice mandate as the main trigger. That is more than any productivity or ROI argument.

The pain that builds before adoption is operational. Before ERP, 71% of respondents named inventory inaccuracy as a top pain point, and 63% named a lack of real-time visibility into production. Compliance forces the decision, but stock and shop-floor problems are felt every day.

How long does it take to get ROI from ERP in India?

The median payback is 22 months, and 68% of adopters recovered their investment within two years.

Other results reported by adopters:

●     73% saw significant inventory accuracy improvements, the most common benefit, ahead of financial reporting (61%) and output visibility or OEE (54%).

●     Monthly financial closing fell from about 12 days to 4 days on average.

●     Average annual GST penalty savings were ₹3.8 lakh.

●     Procurement savings averaged 8 to 12% on managed spend, according to the report’s summary figures.

These are self-reported averages, so results will vary by business. 7% of adopters could not measure ROI because they had no pre-ERP baseline.

Why do ERP implementations fail in India?

The most common cause is time. 38% of those citing a failure cause said the implementation took too long.

Top causes of failure, in the report’s survey of 312 companies that attempted implementation:

  1. Implementation took too long (38%)
  2. Vendor went unresponsive after the sale (34%)
  3. Staff refused to use the system (31%)
  4. Data migration went badly (27%)
  5. Software did not match the business process (24%)

Most failures come from time, support and people, not technology. That is why a short, time-boxed rollout and a responsive local team matter.

What do Indian manufacturers want from ERP in 2026?

●     Mobile access for shop-floor supervisors: 79% of manufacturers evaluating ERP in 2025 called it a must-have, up from 41% in 2022.

●     India-based support: 67% ranked local-language support and an India-based team in their top three vendor criteria, ahead of brand (52%) and price (48%).

●     GST and e-invoicing automation and real-time inventory management are expected as standard.

What are Indian manufacturers planning next?

91% of businesses already on ERP plan to activate at least one new module within 12 months. The new-investment priorities:

●     Mobile ERP or shop-floor digitisation: 58%

●     IoT sensors and machine monitoring: 44%

●     AI or predictive analytics in operations: 29%

The question has shifted from “do I need ERP?” to “what do I add next?”
