Paper-Based Bakery Wraps Market Revenue Forecast Points to USD 728.2 Mn by 2036

The global Paper-Based Bakery Wraps Market is projected to grow from USD 391.6 million in 2026 to USD 728.2 million by 2036, registering a 6.4% CAGR during the forecast period, according to Future Market Insights.

Paper-based bakery wraps are gaining attention as bakeries, foodservice operators and packaging converters look for fiber-based formats that can manage grease while supporting evolving packaging and recovery requirements.

The commercial challenge is straightforward but important: bakery wraps come into direct contact with food, often under warm or oily conditions. Any change in paper grade or barrier chemistry therefore needs to maintain oil resistance, food-contact compliance and practical handling performance.

Greaseproof Wraps Lead Product Type

Greaseproof wraps are projected to account for 30.0% of product-type demand in 2026.

Their position reflects the need to control oil transfer during bakery handling while retaining the foldability required for bread, pastries and other products served directly to consumers.

For bakery operators, the wrap needs to protect the product without becoming difficult to fold, tear or dispense during busy counter operations.

The FDA's January 2025 action determining that 35 food-contact notifications covering PFAS greaseproofing agents were no longer effective has also increased attention around alternative grease-resistant chemistries for direct food wrapping.

Greaseproof Paper Leads the Paper Grade Category

Greaseproof paper is expected to hold 30.0% of paper-grade demand in 2026.

The paper grade concentrates oil resistance within the fiber structure rather than relying on a separate plastic film. This makes the specification particularly relevant for bakery applications where food contact, grease holdout and end-of-life performance need to be considered together.

Converters also evaluate odor neutrality, print stability and performance under warm-service conditions before approving a new paper grade for recurring production.

Ahlstrom's renewal of CMA-W certification for its Genuine Vegetable Parchment food-grade portfolio in June 2026 provides another example of how documented third-party evidence can support qualification decisions.

Sheets Account for 36.0% of Format Demand

Sheets are forecast to represent 36.0% of format demand in 2026.

Pre-cut sheets reduce preparation time at bakery counters because staff can dispense a standardized wrap without measuring or cutting material from a roll. Consistent dimensions can also make per-item paper consumption easier to forecast across recurring store programs.

The format is not limited to manual wrapping. Seaman Paper introduced heat-sealable recyclable paper packaging in September 2025 using flat-sheet and tube formats compatible with common converting equipment.

This points to a broader opportunity for paper formats that can move from simple manual wrapping toward automated and sealed bakery applications.

Qualification Remains a Commercial Barrier

Replacing an existing bakery wrap is not simply a material procurement decision.

A new paper construction may require another qualification cycle if its barrier chemistry, converting behavior or food-contact conditions differ from the incumbent material.

The FMI report identifies qualification cost as a key restraint. Changes in barrier chemistry can require additional trials before a bakery approves the material for recurring use.

Heat-sealable papers create an opportunity by extending paper-based formats into automated applications where reliable sealing is required.

Nandini Roy Choudhury, Principal Consultant at Future Market Insights, explains:

“Bakery wrap qualification should test foods and packing methods since grease holdout changes with temperature. Stronger offers pair documented chemistry with formats that preserve labor efficiency and machine settings across repeat orders.”

Country Markets Show Different Growth Conditions

Brazil is projected to record the fastest CAGR among the profiled countries at 6.8%, followed by the United Kingdom at 6.3%, Germany at 6.2%, the United States at 5.8%, and Japan at 5.0%.

Brazil's market is influenced by cellulosic food-contact requirements and regional converting networks serving independent bakeries and larger chains.

In the UK, recyclability classifications make disposal claims an increasingly important part of bakery-wrap specifications.

Germany combines established paper recovery infrastructure with strict expectations around food-contact performance and end-of-life characteristics.

The United States places greater emphasis on formulation-specific food-contact authorization, while Japan combines precise bakery formats with local paper collection requirements.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive landscape includes Nordic Paper, Seaman Paper, Novolex, Metsä Tissue, Ahlstrom, Koehler Paper, UPM-Kymmene Corporation and Mondi plc.

Competition spans dedicated greaseproof paper producers, functional barrier-paper suppliers and converted food-wrap providers.

Nordic Paper and Metsä Tissue focus strongly on greaseproof paper production. Ahlstrom and Koehler Paper provide barrier-paper capabilities, while UPM-Kymmene Corporation and Mondi extend functional paper platforms. Seaman Paper and Novolex provide converted formats and foodservice channel access.

Recent developments include Mondi's August 2025 production ramp-up of FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate at Solec and Ahlstrom's May 2025 inauguration of its PMZ5 parchmentizer in France. Novolex also completed its combination with Pactiv Evergreen in April 2025.

Outlook

The Paper-Based Bakery Wraps Market is moving toward solutions that combine grease protection, food-contact documentation, converting performance and practical recovery pathways.

For bakery operators, the most commercially useful paper is not simply the one with the strongest sustainability claim. It is the material that maintains oil resistance at the intended temperature, works within existing workflows and can be supported consistently across repeat orders.
