Snus Market and Young Adults: What Flavor Preferences Reveal
Snus Market Size & Growth Forecast
The global snus market was valued at USD 3.0 billion in 2023 and is estimated at USD 3.4 billion in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 4.1 billion by 2030. That adds roughly USD 1.1 billion in revenue between 2023 and 2030, at a 4.6% CAGR.
Europe held 62.1% of global revenue in 2023, North America held 24.3%, and Asia Pacific accounted for about 9.3%. Together these three regions make up 95.7% of the snus market. That leaves only around 4.3% (our calculation) for Central & South America and the Middle East & Africa, so the market is still highly concentrated. The U.S. snus market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% from 2024 to 2030, which is 1.3 percentage points faster than the global rate.
Several factors drive this growth. Snus can be used almost anywhere, while cigarettes are restricted in no-smoking zones. More consumers are also looking for smoke-free nicotine options as awareness of smoking-related health risks grows. Norway shows how adoption can shift: in 2022, 15% of people aged 16 to 74 used snus daily and another 4% used it occasionally. Among 25- to 34-year-olds, daily use reached 27%, roughly one in four. Marketing aimed at women, together with flavored and better-designed products, is also credited with lifting daily use among young women.

Key Snus Market Segments & Trends
By product, portioned snus dominates with an 83.08% revenue share (2023). Pre-packed pouches remove the preparation step, and buyers perceive them as more hygienic. Loose snus is the smaller segment but is projected to grow at a 4.5% CAGR, because users value mixing their own flavors and strengths.
By flavor, flavored snus accounted for about 90.37% of revenue in 2023. Fruity, minty and herbal profiles mask the taste of traditional tobacco and attract younger users. Truth Initiative data cited in the report shows that more than four in five young adults aged 18 to 24 who have ever used tobacco say their first product was flavored. Original/unflavored snus is forecast to grow at 4.3%, held up by familiarity and brand loyalty.
By distribution channel, tobacco stores led with about 68.65% of revenue in 2023. Knowledgeable staff and wide selection make them a natural starting point for new users. The online channel is projected to grow at a 10.5% CAGR, more than double the overall rate. Buyers like the convenience, the product range and the privacy, especially where tobacco carries a social stigma.
What this means: Loose snus and unflavored snus are both growing slightly below the 4.6% market average, while online sales grow far faster than anything else. The growth story in the snus market is therefore less about what people buy and more about how they buy it. Brands with strong e-commerce and discreet fulfillment are better placed than those relying on shelf space alone.
Other trends are reshaping the category:
- Product innovation: New flavors, varied nicotine strengths and fresher packaging, plus tobacco-free nicotine pouches and sustainability efforts.
- CBD-infused snus: Positioned around relaxation and stress relief, it is an emerging driver.
- Regulation: Rules on composition, packaging, marketing and health warnings shape where the snus market can expand. Looser regimes see more innovation.
- Substitutes: Nicotine gums, patches, lozenges, chewing tobacco, tobacco-free pouches and e-cigarettes all compete for the same consumers.
- User concentration: It is highest in culturally accepting markets such as Sweden and Norway, where brand loyalty is strong.
