Paints And Coatings Market Innovation: Hull Coatings, Digital Painting and More
The paints and coatings market was valued at USD 219.9 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach USD 333.6 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2026 to 2033. Asia Pacific leads with a 35.4% revenue share, and waterborne coatings are the largest product segment at 40.9%. The sections below cover the market’s size, segments and leading players.
Market Size & Forecast
The Headline Figures
The global paints and coatings market was worth USD 219.9 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 231.1 billion in 2026. From that 2026 base, it is forecast to climb to USD 333.6 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 5.4%. The historical data runs from 2021 to 2024, with 2025 as the base year and 2026 to 2033 as the forecast window. The study is measured in both revenue (USD billion) and volume (kilotons).
What the Forecast Implies
The figures also show how much room the market has left to grow. Moving from USD 231.1 billion in 2026 to USD 333.6 billion in 2033 means roughly USD 102.5 billion of new annual revenue over seven years. That is nearly half the size of the entire 2025 market. The step from 2025 to 2026 is about 5.1%, so the forecast rate is close to what the market is already delivering. This makes the paints and coatings market a steady compounder rather than a speculative growth story.
The demand drivers are practical. Coatings protect surfaces from corrosion, moisture, chemicals and wear, so builders and manufacturers use them to extend material life and cut long-term maintenance costs. Rising output of vehicles, appliances and building materials adds volume. Environmental rules add a second layer of demand by pushing buyers toward low-emission formulations, and producers are responding with scratch-resistant, chemically stable and antimicrobial products.

Key Segmentation
Product: Where the Revenue Sits
The report splits the paints and coatings market into four product groups: radiation-cured, powder, waterborne and solvent-borne coatings.
Waterborne coatings lead with 40.9% of 2025 revenue, which works out to roughly USD 90 billion on the 2025 base (our own arithmetic, not a figure from the report). Their low volatile organic compound content suits indoor and regulated uses such as architectural coatings and automotive finishes. Better drying time, adhesion and durability have also closed the performance gap with older systems.
Powder coatings are the fastest-growing segment, with a CAGR of 6.1% from 2026 to 2033. That is 0.7 percentage points above the overall market rate. They are applied dry and cured with heat, so no solvents are needed and leftover material can be reused. They also form thick, uniform layers that resist corrosion, abrasion and chemicals, which is why appliances, metal furniture, automotive parts and infrastructure components rely on them. The limits are heat-sensitive materials and complex shapes.
Radiation-cured coatings cure almost instantly, which speeds up production in electronics, packaging and wood finishing. Their use stays concentrated in specialized applications because of equipment needs and limits on outdoor or very large-scale work.
Solvent-borne coatings remain in use where conditions are harsh, such as industrial equipment, marine environments and heavy-duty work. Tighter emission rules are limiting their reach, but they stay essential where performance cannot be compromised.

Region: Asia Pacific Sets the Pace
Asia Pacific held 35.4% of revenue in 2025 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2026 to 2033. That is a full percentage point faster than the global rate, so the region is both the biggest market and the fastest-growing one. The report cites three supports for this. The region accounts for more than half of global construction activity, more than 50% of manufacturing output and more than 50% of the world’s vehicle production. India held the largest country-level share in 2025, helped by housing demand, infrastructure spending and rising decorative paint use among middle-income households.
China contributes over 25% of global construction output and more than 30% of manufactured goods. Vietnam is emerging as well, with manufacturing at around one quarter of its GDP and waterborne coatings taking a growing share of demand.
In North America, construction spending exceeds USD 2 trillion a year. About 38% of U.S. buildings are more than 50 years old, which keeps maintenance and repainting demand steady. Mexico adds automotive volume, with vehicle production above 4 million units annually.
Europe’s growth is tied to regulation. The EU targets at least a 55% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and buildings account for roughly 40% of energy use. Together these push renovation and eco-friendly formulations, and Germany’s industrial and automotive base keeps demand for performance coatings high.
In the Middle East, coatings must withstand heat, sand and harsh climates, and oil and gas operations add demand for corrosion protection. Latin America and Africa are growing gradually, with Brazil central to Latin America and infrastructure and housing projects driving both regions. Buyers there tend to favor affordable, durable products.
Major Industry Players
A Moderately Concentrated Field
The paints and coatings market is moderately concentrated, with large multinationals sitting alongside many regional and specialized producers. Scale gives the big names broad portfolios, strong distribution networks and brand reliability. Smaller firms survive by serving niche applications and customized requests.
Grand View Research names Jotun, The Sherwin-Williams Company, AkzoNobel, Axalta Coating Systems, PPG Industries, RPM International, BASF SE, Henkel AG & Company KGaA and Contego International among the major players. The profiled companies also include Hempel A/S, No-Burn Inc., Nullifire, 3M and Albi Protective Coatings. The top seven manufacturers are AkzoNobel, Sherwin-Williams, BASF, PPG, RPM, Nippon Paint Holdings and Asian Paints. Together they held about 58% of the global market by the end of 2023. That also means the remaining 42% or so is spread across a long tail of smaller suppliers, which is where regional and niche competition plays out.
How Leaders Compete
The report describes mature players as having strong product portfolios, active R&D, wide geographic reach and a focus on mergers and acquisitions. Their weakness is limited attention to smaller, local customers. Emerging players such as Contego International, Nullifire, Rudolf Hensel and Tor Coatings win through local footholds, customized offerings and affordable pricing. Their constraints are limited geographic presence and limited funds for global expansion.
Recent deals show where the leaders are investing. In April 2025, Jotun agreed with Thoresen Shipping Singapore to apply its Hull Skating Solutions technology on the bulk carrier Thor Brave. The aim is to keep the hull clean, improve fuel efficiency and cut carbon emissions. In January 2025, Axalta and Dürr Systems announced a partnership on digital paint solutions for automotive manufacturers. It pairs Axalta’s NextJet precision application technology with Dürr’s robotics for overspray-free, maskless two-tone and graphic designs, cutting material waste. Both moves focus on efficiency and lower emissions rather than on the paint itself.
Key Takeaway
The paints and coatings market is growing at 5.4% a year toward USD 333.6 billion by 2033. Waterborne coatings hold the largest share, powder coatings are growing fastest, and Asia Pacific is the biggest and fastest-growing region at a 6.4% CAGR. A few global leaders hold the largest share, while regional specialists compete on customization and price.
