The U.S. medical device manufacturers market was valued at USD 256.2 billion in 2024. It is projected to reach USD 360.1 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 5.9% from 2025 to 2030, according to Grand View Research. Cardiology devices are the fastest-growing segment, a broad "others" group holds the largest share, and Stryker, Medtronic, and Abbott anchor the competitive field.

Market Size and Growth

Where the numbers stand

Grand View Research puts the U.S. medical device manufacturers market at USD 256.2 billion in 2024 and USD 270.1 billion in 2025. Working from the report's own figures, that is a step-up of about USD 13.9 billion, or roughly 5.4%. The forecast then adds close to USD 90 billion between 2025 and 2030. The report describes the market's growth stage as high and accelerating, and the path from 5.4% to a 5.9% CAGR fits that description.

What is pushing demand upward

Four forces drive the U.S. medical device manufacturers market: a growing geriatric population, wider adoption of minimally invasive procedures, more sports and road accidents, and manufacturers expanding their geographic reach. The accident factor is measurable. Fatal car crashes in the U.S. rose from 36,835 in 2018 to an estimated 42,795 in 2022, and each serious injury can mean trauma, orthopedic, or neurological device demand.

Technology adds another layer. The report points to AI and machine learning in diagnostics, wearable medical technology, telehealth, and cybersecurity for connected devices as sources of rapid innovation.

The pandemic stress test

COVID-19 showed how much revenue depends on elective procedures. Stryker's 2020 revenue fell about 3.58% from 2019, and Medtronic reported a decline of nearly USD 1.3 billion in fiscal 2020. Drug delivery devices moved the other way, since COVID-19 complications created medical necessity. Companies with exposure to non-elective care were more insulated than those tied to scheduled surgeries.

Top Segments

The "others" group leads with 35.7%

The "others" segment accounted for 35.7% of revenue in 2024, making it the largest slice of the U.S. medical device manufacturers market. It covers IVD diagnostics, medical imaging, dental, ENT, wound care, and general surgery. Because it bundles so many categories, the market's biggest share belongs to a diversified group rather than to a single specialty.

Dental demand shows the scale. Over 36 million Americans are edentulous and another 120 million are missing at least one tooth. Projections suggest more than 200 million people could experience partial tooth loss within 15 years. ENT is also growing as advances in otolaryngology improve diagnostic precision and treatment.

Cardiology moves fastest at 7.7%

Cardiology devices are expected to post the fastest CAGR of 7.7% over the forecast period, about 1.8 percentage points above the overall market rate. The CDC reports one cardiovascular death every 33 seconds, and heart disease costs the U.S. about USD 239.9 billion a year. That cost is close to the size of the whole 2024 device market, which explains why prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment technologies attract so much manufacturer attention.

The report also tracks orthopedic, neurology, drug delivery, ophthalmic, and nephrology and urology devices as separate application categories.

Deals reveal strategy

The 2023 transactions show manufacturers reshaping portfolios in both directions. Abbott acquired Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. in February 2023 at an equity value of about USD 890 million, adding strength in the fastest-growing segment. Stryker bought Cerus Endovascular in May 2023, entering neurointerventional devices. Eli Lilly acquired Sigilon Therapeutics in June 2023 to expand diabetes cell therapy work. On the facilities side, 3M invested USD 468 million in July 2023 to expand its Brookings, South Dakota site.

Baxter went the other way, agreeing in May 2023 to sell its BioPharma Solutions business for USD 4.25 billion, with net after-tax proceeds of about USD 3.4 billion. Buying into high-growth categories while selling non-core units looks like the dominant playbook.

Emerging challengers

Gelmetix targets chronic lower back pain with a polymer gel that restores intervertebral disc integrity. LOCI Orthopedics develops devices for orthopedic extremities. Both operate in orthopedics, where specialized, hard-to-replace products offer room for newcomers.

Regulation as a barrier

U.S. rules are among the most exhaustive in the world. Class III devices need Premarket Approval, and Class II devices typically go through 510(k) clearance by showing substantial equivalence. Together with high switching costs and few direct substitutes, this protects established products and slows new entrants.
