Foot ulcers can develop in areas exposed to repeated pressure or friction. Ill-fitting footwear, repetitive rubbing, and untreated calluses can contribute to skin damage.

Prevention starts with regular foot care. People with diabetes should inspect their feet regularly for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, cracks, or other changes. A mirror can help when it is difficult to see the bottoms of the feet.

Footwear should fit properly and should not create excessive pressure. Socks can also help reduce friction and protect the skin.

Keeping feet clean and moisturised can support healthy skin. However, moisturiser should generally not be applied between the toes because excess moisture in that area can contribute to skin problems.

Avoiding barefoot walking can also reduce the risk of unnoticed injuries, particularly when sensation is reduced.

Blood glucose management is another important part of overall diabetes care. Following an individual's treatment plan can support general health and may help reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.

If a wound develops, it should not be ignored. People with diabetes should seek professional advice about foot wounds rather than attempting to manage a potentially serious ulcer without guidance.

Signs of possible infection can include increasing redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, unpleasant odour, fever, or worsening pain. These symptoms require prompt medical assessment.

Healthcare professionals may assess circulation, sensation, the wound itself, and signs of infection. Treatment can vary depending on the severity and cause of the ulcer.

Understanding diabetic foot ulcers and their risk factors can help people take preventive steps. Regular foot checks and professional diabetes care can be important parts of protecting foot health.
