Tuberculosis Diagnostics Market Opportunities Across High-Burden Countries

7

Tuberculosis diagnostics are becoming increasingly important as the global burden of TB continues to create demand for faster, more accessible, and more precise testing. The Tuberculosis Diagnostics Market reached USD 2.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow from USD 2.5 billion in 2026 to USD 3.2 billion by 2030, registering a 5.8% CAGR during 2025–2030. The market is being shaped not only by the number of people requiring diagnosis, but also by the growing need to identify latent infection and drug resistance while reducing delays in treatment decisions.

The Market Is Moving Through Three Diagnostic Needs

Identify → Understand → Act

TB diagnosis increasingly involves more than confirming whether infection is present.

Identify the infection: Latent TB detection accounted for 40.59% of the market in 2024. Tuberculin skin tests and interferon-gamma release assays remain important tools for identifying latent infection.

Understand resistance: Drug susceptibility testing is projected to record the fastest CAGR. Testing for susceptibility to isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, and second-line drugs helps support treatment selection and resistance management.

Act faster: Rapid molecular technologies are shortening diagnostic timelines. NAATs such as GeneXpert MTB/RIF can identify TB bacteria and rifampicin resistance within hours, compared with weeks for conventional methods.

This shift toward faster and more informative testing is becoming a central feature of the tuberculosis diagnostics market.

Why Diagnostic Demand Remains Persistent

The global TB burden creates a broad diagnostic requirement.

In 2023:

  • Global TB cases reached approximately 10.8 million.
  • 45% of cases were in South-East Asia.
  • 24% were in Africa.
  • 17% were in the Western Pacific.
  • Eight countries contributed more than two-thirds of global cases.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa recorded incidence above 500 cases per 100,000 people.

The disease also affects different population groups unevenly. Adult men represented 55% of cases, women 33%, and children 12%.

At the same time, global TB incidence declined only 8.3% between 2015 and 2023, compared with the 50% reduction targeted by the WHO End TB Strategy for 2025.

For diagnostics, this means the requirement is not simply larger testing volumes. It is also the need to improve how quickly and accurately cases are identified.

One Technology Direction: Faster Results

The development of diagnostic technologies is increasingly focused on reducing the time between sample collection and actionable results.

A simplified TAM-TB assay provides one example. The blood-based test uses approximately 1 mL of blood and has a 24-hour turnaround time. In a Tanzania study involving 479 GeneXpert-positive TB cases and 108 symptomatic GeneXpert-negative controls, the CD38-based approach achieved:

82.2% sensitivity | 93.4% specificity | 0.87 AUC

The results were not significantly affected by HIV status.

Such developments illustrate the broader direction of innovation within the tuberculosis diagnostics market, where usability, speed, and diagnostic performance are becoming increasingly connected.

Investment Is Creating Another Layer of Opportunity

Market development is also linked to healthcare spending and TB-control programs.

Global requirement: Annual investment needs were estimated at USD 22 billion, alongside an additional USD 5 billion for research by 2027.

Current allocation: USD 5.8 billion has been allocated, highlighting the gap between required and available investment.

United States: TB funding increased from USD 233 million in 2013 to USD 406 million in 2023.

Economic value: TB screening and preventive treatment can generate returns of up to USD 39 for every dollar spent.

These funding patterns support continued attention toward diagnostic infrastructure, research, and new testing technologies.

Regional Market Snapshot

Asia Pacific: The region held the largest market share in 2024 at 37.18%. High disease burden, unmet diagnostic needs, scientific research, healthcare investment, and evolving regulations are supporting expansion. China reported approximately 741,000 new TB cases in 2023, while India continues to strengthen its diagnostic infrastructure.

North America: Advanced healthcare infrastructure, reimbursement, awareness, and sophisticated diagnostic capabilities support the market. The U.S. reported 8,040 TB cases as of December 14, 2024, while latent TB infection affects up to 13 million Americans.

Europe:  Research institutions, government programs, and nonprofit initiatives are supporting diagnostic development. Germany held the largest European revenue share in 2024, while developments in the UK and France are creating additional diagnostic opportunities.

Latin America: The region is expected to see significant growth in rapid molecular diagnostics, point-of-care testing, and surveillance. Brazil is emerging as an important market as targeted approaches to high-risk populations receive increasing attention.

Middle East & Africa: Healthcare facility expansion, rising spending, and investment in countries such as South Africa, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia are supporting market development, although affordability and infrastructure remain challenges.

What Is Changing Next?

The tuberculosis diagnostics market is moving toward a more connected diagnostic model in which speed + resistance information + accessibility matter together.

Molecular assays, serological technologies, next-generation sequencing, point-of-care testing, and improved latent infection screening are contributing to this transition. Meanwhile, collaborations between diagnostic companies, research institutions, governments, and healthcare organizations are helping expand development and accessibility.

With TB continuing to affect millions of people globally, the market's future will remain closely linked to the ability to detect infection earlier, identify resistance more effectively, and make advanced diagnostics accessible across regions where the disease burden remains high.
