Agricultural Biologicals Market Strategies: How Mature and Emerging Players Compete Differently
Market Overview and Growth
Agricultural biologicals are crop inputs sourced from naturally occurring materials. They protect plants from pests and disease and support productivity without relying on synthetic chemistry. They have moved from a niche choice to a core part of modern, sustainable farming.
The agricultural biologicals market's path is easy to trace. It was worth USD 12.2 billion in 2025 and is estimated to step up to USD 13.5 billion in 2026. From there it is forecast to climb to USD 19.5 billion by 2033, a 5.4% CAGR across 2026 to 2033. North America anchors the market, holding 34.3% of global revenue in 2025.
What drives growth: Demand is rising for organically grown, residue-free food. Soil degradation and chemical residue buildup are also pushing farmers toward biofertilizers, biopesticides and biostimulants. Government backing for sustainable agriculture and wider biological portfolios from input companies add to the momentum.
What holds it back: Biological products can have short shelf lives and are sensitive to temperature, humidity and microbial activity. That leads to uneven field performance. Many farmers still prefer conventional agrochemicals for their fast, familiar results, and awareness remains low in price-sensitive markets.
Insight beyond the headline: The jump from 2025 to 2026 is about USD 1.3 billion, or roughly 10.7%. That is nearly double the 5.4% pace forecast afterward. The market then adds about USD 6.0 billion between 2026 and 2033. Growth looks front-loaded, with steadier compounding later, so early positioning matters most in the next few seasons.

Key Segments
By product: Biopesticides led with a 56.7% share in 2025, which works out to roughly USD 6.9 billion on the 2025 base. Microbial pesticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis and pheromone-based pest traps are widely used. Biofertilizers rely on nitrogen-fixing bacteria like azotobacter, rhizobium and azospirillum. Biostimulants improve nutrient uptake, stress tolerance and crop appearance.
By crop type: Cereals and grains led with 37.1%, driven by demand for wheat, rice, corn, barley and millet. Azotobacter can reduce nitrogen requirements, and pairing it with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria has improved wheat yields. Oilseeds and pulses, fruits and vegetables, and other crops make up the rest.
By application method: Foliar spray dominated with 63.7%, because applying nutrients directly to leaves gives fast absorption and a quick fix for deficiencies. Seed and soil treatments are growing as chemical overuse degrades soil health. Post-harvest use is expanding as well, with Metschnikowia pulcherrima emerging as a biocontrol agent against spoilage.
By region:
- North America (34.3%): The U.S. holds 76.8% of the regional market. That is roughly 26% of the global total, a figure we derived by multiplying the two shares.
- Europe: The EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy are pushing farmers toward bio-based inputs. Germany is one of the most mature markets.
- Asia Pacific: China, India, Japan and Australia lead, supported by sustainability regulation. India's National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture promotes biofertilizer use.
- Latin America: Brazil and Mexico are growing steadily across cereals, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables.
- Middle East and Africa: Food-security investment and farm loan schemes in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya are encouraging adoption.
Insight beyond the headline: Foliar spray's 63.7% share shows how closely the market follows existing spraying habits. The restraint of poor shelf life and variable performance falls hardest on seed treatment and post-harvest applications, where formulation stability matters most. Companies that solve stability could capture the least crowded growth lanes.

Major Market Players
The market is highly fragmented. Multinationals hold dominant positions, while small and mid-sized firms win with crop-specific, regional products. Key companies profiled in the Grand View Research report include:
- CBF China Bio-Fertilizer AG
- Novozymes A/S
- Mapleton Agri Biotec
- Biomax
- Rizobacter Argentina SA
- Kiwa Bio-Tech Products Group Corporation
Mature vs. emerging players: Novozymes, National Fertilizers, Lallemand, Rizobacter and Symborg are classed as mature. They bring global distribution, broad microbial portfolios and proven field data, but face higher costs, multi-country approval dependence and slower commercialization. The remaining players are classed as emerging. They offer cost-effective, regionally targeted products and faster responses to local demand, but have limited distribution, smaller production capacity and tighter budgets.
Deals to watch: Syngenta and Biotalys partnered in April 2023 on a new-mode-of-action solution using AGROBODY technology to tackle pest resistance. In September 2022, Bioceres Crop Solutions, a major Rizobacter shareholder, merged with Marrone Bio to broaden its bio-protection portfolio. With M&A activity still moderate in a fragmented field, further consolidation looks plausible as approvals and bio-based investments grow.
