The global lighting market was valued at USD 142.5 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 225.6 billion by 2033, expanding at a 6.1% CAGR from 2026 to 2033, according to Grand View Research. Demand for energy-efficient products, rapid urbanization, and the spread of connected lighting are the main forces behind this growth.

Market Size and Growth

  • 2025 market size: USD 142.5 billion
  • 2026 estimate: USD 149.1 billion
  • 2033 forecast: USD 225.6 billion
  • CAGR (2026-2033): 6.1%
  • Leading region: Asia Pacific, with a 39.8% revenue share in 2025

How large is the lighting market right now?

The industry is estimated at USD 149.1 billion in 2026. It is mature, yet it keeps expanding because the technology inside it keeps changing. Incandescent and halogen products are steadily being retired, and LED has taken over as the default choice. Buyers prefer it for its lower energy consumption, longer service life, and increasingly affordable pricing.

What the numbers really tell us

By our own calculation, the market adds about USD 76.5 billion between 2026 and 2033 (USD 225.6 billion minus USD 149.1 billion). The move from 2025 to 2026 works out to roughly 4.6%, which is below the 6.1% forecast CAGR. This suggests growth is weighted toward the later years, as smart-city programs, connected-building upgrades, and IoT-enabled fixtures shift from pilot projects to large-scale deployment. Both figures are our own arithmetic and are not published in the report.

Regional growth engines

Asia Pacific accounted for 39.8% of global revenue in 2025. People moving into cities are creating demand for modern lighting in homes, offices, and public spaces. China is among the world's largest producers and exporters of lighting, particularly LED, and its established supply chain keeps production costs low. India is expanding fast on the back of construction activity and smart-city projects. In 2025, Delhi's Public Works Department announced plans to replace around 45,000 conventional streetlights with app-controlled smart LED units.

North America contributed over 21.0% of global revenue in 2025. Smart, energy-efficient lighting is well established there, and IoT integration is enabling deeper customization and better energy tracking. In the United States, the Department of Energy announced Solid-State Lighting core technology and product development selections in 2025, showing continued government support for LED and connected lighting.

Europe is growing largely because of policy. The EU Ecodesign Directive and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive are steering residential, commercial, and industrial users toward efficient lighting. In Germany, industrial, warehouse, and commercial operators are swapping older fixtures for LEDs to lower running costs and stay compliant with environmental rules.

Key Industry Trends

Smart lighting is pulling ahead

Indoor lighting held the biggest application share in 2025, but smart lighting is expected to record the fastest CAGR. Homeowners want lights that work with voice assistants, thermostats, and security systems from a single interface. AI-driven automation adds practical value by adjusting output according to occupancy and daylight, which saves energy without any effort from the user.

Human-centric lighting is going mainstream

Human-centric lighting (HCL) changes color temperature and intensity through the day to support productivity, mood, and well-being. It is gaining popularity in offices, healthcare facilities, and homes. Lighting is moving from a basic utility toward a wellness feature, which gives manufacturers room to justify premium pricing.

Today's leaders are not tomorrow's fastest growers

A revealing pattern runs through the segment data. In application, indoor lighting holds the largest share while smart lighting grows fastest. In end-use, residential is the biggest segment while commercial is expected to grow fastest. In distribution, offline dominates revenue while online is set to expand quickest. LED is the exception, since the report names it as both the largest and the fastest-growing type. Across the other categories, the pattern is consistent: established, familiar formats generate most of today's revenue, while connected, design-led, and digital formats drive future growth. Companies that focus only on current leaders risk missing the segments that will define the next decade.

Offline retail leads, but online is catching up

The offline channel captured over 64.0% of the market in 2025. Shoppers trust showrooms, home improvement stores, and electronics outlets for product quality, warranty support, and easy returns. Online is projected to grow fastest because it offers wider selection, price comparison, customer reviews, and seasonal promotions. Brands that combine strong physical presence with good online discovery are best positioned.

Commercial spaces use light as design

Commercial lighting is forecast to be the fastest-growing end-use segment. Smart streetlights and connected networks in public areas are one driver. Design is another: retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues rely on decorative, ambient, and accent lighting to shape the customer experience.

New use cases are emerging

Recent deals show the industry branching out. In December 2025, Cree LED, a Penguin Solutions brand, partnered with SANlight GmbH to build its J Series LEDs into horticulture luminaires for vertical farming and controlled-environment agriculture. In January 2025, LEDVANCE acquired loblicht, a German premium design-lighting specialist, to strengthen its project-based offering. Growth now extends well beyond bulb replacement into farming and architectural design.

Challenges Slowing the Market

Low-quality and counterfeit LED products that fall short of safety and efficiency standards erode buyer confidence. Disposal of mercury-containing CFL and fluorescent products also creates environmental and regulatory pressure. Governments and manufacturers are responding with stricter quality controls and recycling rules, which should favor certified, compliant products.

Competitive Landscape

The report profiles 15 companies: Acuity Brands, Signify Holding, OSRAM, Eaton, Cree Lighting, Hubbell, Panasonic, Havells India, Nichia, GE Lighting, Everlight Electronics, Seoul Semiconductor, Siteco, Toshiba Lighting, and Zumtobel Group. Signify, formerly part of Philips, operates in more than 70 countries and offers Philips Hue and the Interact IoT platform. Acuity Brands, headquartered in Atlanta, serves commercial, industrial, residential, and infrastructure customers through brands such as Lithonia Lighting and Holophane.
