Diabetic Sores: Recognizing Wounds Before They Become Serious

Diabetic sores can develop on the feet, legs, or other areas of the body. They may result from minor injuries that heal slowly because diabetes can affect nerves, blood vessels, and the body's ability to respond to infection.

A diabetic sore may initially look like a small blister, scratch, or irritated area. However, reduced sensation can make it difficult for a person to recognize the injury. Neuropathy may prevent normal pain signals from reaching the brain, allowing repeated pressure or friction to continue damaging the area.

Common warning signs include redness, swelling, warmth, drainage, skin discoloration, and an open wound that does not appear to be improving. Changes in smell or increasing fluid from a wound can also warrant professional evaluation.

Foot inspection is a simple but important habit for people with diabetes. Checking the tops, bottoms, heels, and areas between the toes can help identify problems early. A mirror can help when the bottom of the foot is difficult to see.

Proper footwear is equally important. Shoes should provide adequate room and should not create repeated pressure points. Walking barefoot can increase the risk of cuts and other injuries.

Medical treatment depends on the cause and severity of the sore. A healthcare professional may examine circulation, sensation, wound depth, and signs of infection. Wound care may involve cleaning, protective dressings, pressure reduction, or other treatment.

People with diabetes should avoid assuming that a painless sore is harmless. Lack of pain can sometimes be related to nerve damage rather than absence of a problem.

Diabetic sores can become complicated when left untreated. Prompt medical evaluation is especially important when there is spreading redness, swelling, fever, significant drainage, or a wound that is getting larger.

Good diabetes management, regular foot examinations, appropriate footwear, and early attention to skin changes can all contribute to reducing complications.
