The global cryocooler market was valued at USD 3.0 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 5.7 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 8.3% from 2026 to 2033. North America holds the largest regional share at 35.3%, Gifford-McMahon is the leading technology at 33.2%, and Sumitomo Heavy Industries and RIX Industries are among the key players.

How Big Is the Cryocooler Market and How Fast Is It Growing?

According to Grand View Research, the cryocooler market was worth USD 3.0 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 3.3 billion in 2026. It is forecast to reach USD 5.7 billion by 2033. That adds roughly USD 2.7 billion in eight years, so the market is close to doubling.

The 2026 estimate is itself about 10% above 2025, slightly ahead of the 8.3% forecast CAGR. That points to early momentum rather than a slow build.

Growth comes from one common need: keeping sensitive equipment at extremely low temperatures without liquid cryogens. Cryocoolers cool power systems, superconducting magnets and semiconductors. They also cool infrared sensors in night-vision equipment and ground-mounted and airborne military systems. In space, they chill the infrared sensors on remote sensing satellites so Earth observation instruments stay sensitive.

Regionally, North America led in 2025 with a 35.3% revenue share, backed by established space programs, quantum computing work, medical imaging and strong R&D spending. The U.S. was the largest national market. Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region.

The country forecasts show how unevenly that growth is spread. China is projected to grow at a 25.1% CAGR, about three times the global rate, on the strength of its electronics, semiconductor, space and military investment. India is forecast at 9.7%, driven by medical imaging and its expanding electronics, space and defense programs, and France at 9.0%, driven by defense and aerospace. Anyone tracking growth rather than size should watch Asia Pacific.

Demand is also spread across many end uses. Military and defense is the largest application at 21.5% of revenue in 2025, which still leaves nearly four-fifths of demand elsewhere: healthcare, aerospace, power and energy, research, transport and mining. No single sector's budget cycle can move the whole market.

Which Cryocooler Technologies Lead the Market?

Grand View Research segments the market into five cooler types: Gifford-McMahon, pulse-tube, Stirling, Brayton and Joule-Thomson. Each has a different job.

Gifford-McMahon (GM) coolers led in 2025 with a 33.2% revenue share. They are favored for their affordable price and their stable cooling at cryogenic temperatures with relatively low maintenance. They are common in MRI systems, laboratory equipment and superconducting magnets. They also fill gaps left by nitrogen liquefiers, helium recondensation systems and cryo vacuum devices in scientific research. In January 2024, SHI Cryogenics Group launched the RJT-100, its most powerful 4K cooler, delivering up to 9.0 W at 4.2 K. That shows GM technology still being pushed toward higher capacity.

Stirling coolers are the defense workhorse. They cool infrared sensors mounted on the ground, in the air and on ships, and they appear in missile guidance systems, thermal cameras and portable cryogenic devices. Demand for night-vision cameras adds to their use.

Pulse-tube coolers serve aerospace, defense, semiconductor and scientific applications. Their appeal is reliability, low maintenance and reduced vibration. Low vibration matters most in quantum computing and sensitive instruments, which is why pulse-tube designs are central to the quantum opportunity.

Brayton coolers suit large-scale aerospace, satellite and industrial systems that need continuous, efficient cooling. Joule-Thomson coolers fit compact defense systems, gas liquefaction and scientific instruments.

The heat exchanger split is a separate way to read the market. Regenerative designs led in 2025 with 59.1% of revenue, while recuperative designs, used in Brayton and other continuous-flow systems, held 40.6% in 2024. The report ties recuperative demand to industry's push to cut energy use by recovering and reusing waste heat.

Together, these segments show the market has no single winning technology. Buyers choose by cooling capacity, vibration tolerance, lifespan and cost, and that is how a mid-priced GM cooler and a compact Stirling cooler can both be market leaders in different settings.

Who Are the Major Cryocooler Companies?

The report profiles eleven companies: Sumitomo Heavy Industries, RIX Industries, Northrop Grumman, Bluefors Oy, RICOR, AMETEK, ULVAC Cryogenics, CryoSpectra GmbH, Lihan Cryogenics, CSSC Pride (Nanjing) Cryogenic Technology and Edwards Vacuum.

The report splits them into two camps. Established players such as Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Northrop Grumman, AMETEK, Edwards Vacuum, RIX Industries and ULVAC Cryogenics invest heavily in R&D, hold long-term government and industrial contracts, and run global service networks. Their trade-offs are higher operating costs and slower adaptation to niche or fast-changing needs.

Emerging and regional players, including Bluefors Oy, RICOR, CryoSpectra, Lihan Cryogenics and CSSC Pride, compete through customization, competitive pricing and regional partnerships, often in quantum computing and research laboratories. They move faster but have thinner international distribution and after-sales support.

Two companies show what each camp is good at. Sumitomo Heavy Industries makes cryocoolers for MRI machines and advanced physics and chemistry research. It also makes cryopumps that create ultra-high vacuum environments for semiconductor production. RIX Industries combines gas generation systems, precision compressors and cryogenic cooling, serving marine, aerospace, industrial, medical, energy and critical infrastructure markets.

The most telling move came in March 2023, when Bluefors Oy acquired Cryomech of Syracuse, New York. The deal brought together nearly 600 experts and strengthened Bluefors' service to quantum technology, physics research and industrial customers. It suggests the newer players are consolidating, not just competing.

What Could Slow the Market Down?

The main restraint is cost. Cryocoolers need specialized materials, precision engineering and skilled integration and maintenance, which raises total cost of ownership and can put them out of reach for cost-sensitive buyers, particularly in emerging economies. Suppliers that lower lifetime cost through reliability and low maintenance are best placed to open those markets.

The Bottom Line

The cryocooler market is a USD 3.0 billion industry heading toward USD 5.7 billion, built on defense, space, healthcare and semiconductor demand, with quantum computing as the newest growth driver. For buyers, investors and content strategists, the useful signals are Asia Pacific's growth, the spread of demand across applications and the consolidation among quantum-focused suppliers.
