Rockville, MD., September 15, 2026 — The global Copper Market is projected to reach USD 511.78 billion by 2036, rising from USD 265.08 billion in 2026 at a CAGR of 6.8%, according to Fact.MR. The market is being driven by expanding electricity grids, renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicle production, and data center construction. The market is expected to create an absolute dollar opportunity of USD 246.71 billion between 2026 and 2036.

The supply side is under pressure. Aging mine deposits, declining ore grades, extended permitting timelines, and geopolitical risks are limiting new production growth, while copper prices opened 2026 at USD 5.88 per pound. Fact.MR identifies this widening supply-demand balance as a defining factor for the market through 2036.

Copper Market Gains From Energy Infrastructure

Electrical and electronics accounts for 40% of the application segment in 2026, making it the largest application category. Copper remains central to power generation, transmission and distribution cables, transformers, motors, building wiring, and electronic components.

Wires and cables represent 45% of the form segment in 2026. Demand is being supported by grid expansion, renewable power connections, telecommunications infrastructure, and building electrification.

Primary copper accounts for 75% of the product type segment in 2026. Refined copper cathodes and wire bars from mine-based production continue to supply most industrial demand, although secondary copper is gaining importance as recyclers and downstream users seek lower-carbon supply options.

High purity copper holds 60% of the grade segment. These grades serve applications where electrical conductivity is a critical specification, including power cables, transformers, and electronic components.

Supply Constraints Put Mining Investment in Focus

The copper market faces a long development cycle on the supply side. New mines require substantial capital investment and extended permitting periods, while mature deposits are experiencing declining ore grades.

A specific development illustrates the scale of investment now required. Freeport-McMoRan began environmental permitting in March 2026 for a USD 7.5 billion expansion of its El Abra copper mine in Chile. The proposed expansion could increase annual output by more than 300,000 tonnes, with production targeted from 2033.

Freeport-McMoRan also increased capital expenditure guidance to USD 4.3 billion to USD 4.5 billion for 2026 and 2027, compared with USD 3.9 billion in 2025.

The Grasberg Block Cave restart provides another supply development. Freeport-McMoRan expects the operation to reach 85% of normal production by the second half of 2026 following its phased restart.

EVs and Data Centers Add New Demand

Electric vehicle production is increasing copper consumption because an EV requires approximately 80 kg of copper compared with around 20 kg for a conventional vehicle. Fact.MR estimates that EV production scaling could add 2 million to 3 million tonnes of incremental copper demand by 2036.

Data center construction is creating another concentrated source of demand. AI workloads and cloud computing require substantial power distribution and cabling infrastructure, increasing requirements for high-purity copper.

Renewable energy projects also require copper-intensive transmission and connection systems. Grid modernization across the United States, European Union, and India is therefore creating multi-year procurement pipelines.

Recycled copper offers a further supply opportunity. Fact.MR identifies improved collection, sorting, and refining infrastructure as a way to supplement mine production while reducing the carbon intensity associated with primary copper.

India and China Lead Regional Growth

India is projected to expand at a CAGR of 7.4% through 2036, making it the fastest-growing country among the major markets covered by Fact.MR. China follows at 7.1%, supported by its large smelting base, EV manufacturing, renewable energy deployment, and grid modernization.

Brazil is projected to grow at 6.6%, while the United States is expected to expand at 6.3%. Germany is forecast to record a 5.8% CAGR, followed by Saudi Arabia at 5.1% and Japan at 4.7%.

India's demand is being supported by grid expansion, EV adoption, construction activity, and domestic smelting capacity. China's copper consumption benefits from renewable installations, electric vehicle manufacturing, and continued investment in transmission infrastructure.

Analyst View

Shambhu Nath Jha, Principal Consultant at Fact.MR, said copper is entering a period in which demand growth is increasingly difficult for new mine supply to match.

“The copper market is entering a structural supply deficit period where energy transition demand growth consistently outpaces new mine supply.”

Jha also pointed to the scale of recent investment activity. Freeport-McMoRan's USD 7.5 billion El Abra expansion and higher capital expenditure guidance demonstrate the level of investment required to address future supply requirements.
