Subhead : The market is projected to grow at 13.9% CAGR from 2026 to 2036 as home batteries gain ground for backup power, solar self-consumption and energy cost management.

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 8, 2026 — The global Residential Energy Storage Market is estimated at USD 21.072 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 77.434 billion by 2036, expanding at a 13.9% CAGR, according to Fact.MR. The market was valued at approximately USD 18.5 billion in 2025 and is expected to create an absolute dollar opportunity of USD 56.362 billion between 2026 and 2036.

The growth comes as homeowners use batteries for more than backup. Declining lithium-ion battery costs, time-of-use electricity rates, rooftop solar adoption and grid outages are changing the purchase decision. Fact.MR reports that lithium-ion battery pack costs have fallen below USD 130 per kWh at the residential system level, helping shorten payback periods for home storage systems.

Residential Energy Storage Market shifts toward home energy management

Residential energy storage systems include lithium-ion battery packs, integrated solar-plus-storage platforms and standalone battery units. These systems support backup power, time-of-use load shifting and rooftop solar self-consumption. Smart home energy management, vehicle-to-home charging and virtual power plant participation are also expanding their role in household energy systems.

Backup power is the largest application category. It is expected to account for 42.7% of market value in 2026, reflecting homeowner demand for protection against outages linked to extreme weather, wildfire risks and aging distribution infrastructure.

The product landscape is also changing. Battery energy storage systems are expected to hold 48.9% of the product segment in 2026. Lithium-ion chemistry remains dominant because of its energy density, cycle life and declining cost. Lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, is gaining share because of its thermal stability and longer cycle life.

New installations account for 57.3% of the installation type segment in 2026. Systems rated between 5 and 10 kilowatts hold 39.6% of the power rating segment, positioning this configuration as a common choice for whole-home backup and time-of-use optimization.

Why homeowners are buying residential energy storage

Grid reliability is a central factor. Fact.MR identifies extreme weather events and aging infrastructure as key reasons homeowners are placing greater value on backup capability. Feed-in tariff reductions in Europe and Australia are also encouraging solar owners to store more electricity for household consumption rather than export it to the grid.

Virtual power plants are adding another financial incentive. Utilities and third-party aggregators can compensate homeowners for grid services delivered through connected batteries, creating an additional revenue stream that can improve system payback economics.

At the same time, upfront costs remain a barrier. Installed residential storage systems can cost USD 10,000 to USD 20,000, according to Fact.MR. Installation complexity, permitting differences and battery degradation over 10-to-15-year warranties also affect lifecycle economics.

The residential energy storage market is shifting from a solar accessory to a standalone energy management platform, said Shambhu Nath Jha, Principal Consultant at Fact.MR. “Homeowners are increasingly purchasing batteries for grid resilience rather than purely for solar optimization, and utilities are recognizing distributed home storage as a grid asset through virtual power plant programs.”

China leads country growth at 14.5% CAGR

China is projected to record the fastest growth among the major markets, with a 14.5% CAGR from 2026 to 2036. Australia follows at 13.5%, Germany at 13.2%, the United States at 13.0%, the UK at 12.8%, South Korea at 12.5% and Japan at 12.0%.

China's growth is supported by rooftop solar deployment, domestic battery manufacturing and provincial time-of-use tariff structures. Australia benefits from high rooftop solar penetration and lower feed-in tariffs. Germany's demand is linked to high residential electricity prices, solar adoption and reduced feed-in compensation.

The United States represents another major opportunity. The country is valued at USD 7.773 billion in 2026, with wildfire-related power shutoffs, hurricane-driven outages and utility programs supporting adoption.

Solar, batteries and EVs converge

Integrated solar-plus-storage-plus-EV-charging platforms are becoming a key product direction. Manufacturers are combining batteries, inverters and energy management controllers into systems designed to manage solar generation, grid interaction, battery dispatch and EV charging.

Vehicle-to-home integration could extend household storage capacity by allowing EV batteries to supply power during outages. Whole-home platforms can also connect storage with heat pumps, EV chargers, solar systems and smart appliances.
