When Should You Inspect Your Main Sewer Line?

A sewer problem can begin quietly. A drain may become slightly slower, a toilet may occasionally gurgle, or an unpleasant odor may appear outside. These signs are easy to dismiss until a major backup occurs.

Knowing when to investigate can help homeowners avoid unnecessary surprises.

Warning Signs

Multiple slow drains are one of the more important warning signs. If the kitchen, bathroom, and other fixtures begin draining slowly around the same time, the problem may extend beyond an individual drain.

Gurgling toilets, repeated backups, sewage odors, and unexplained wastewater around the property can also indicate a sewer-line problem.

Older Properties

Older homes may have sewer pipes made from materials that deteriorate over time. Clay and cast-iron pipes can experience cracks, corrosion, root intrusion, or other forms of deterioration.

Properties with large trees close to underground plumbing may also deserve additional attention because roots can enter damaged joints or cracks.

Home Purchases

A sewer inspection can be particularly valuable when purchasing a property. Underground plumbing can represent a significant repair expense, and visible property inspections do not necessarily reveal the condition of the sewer line.

Finding a problem before completing a purchase may provide more options than discovering it after moving in.

What the Inspection Involves

A plumber generally accesses the sewer through a cleanout and sends a waterproof camera into the pipe. The technician watches the live footage and can often determine the location and severity of problems.

A typical residential inspection may take around 30 minutes to an hour, although complex conditions can increase the time.

For a complete explanation of the process, warning signs, findings, and cost factors, see this guide to main sewer line inspection.

The goal of an inspection is not automatically to recommend repairs. Instead, it provides information that allows homeowners to make decisions based on the actual condition of their sewer line.
