My Knee Hurts on the Inside: Common Reasons for Medial Knee Pain
When the inside of your knee starts hurting, it is easy to assume that you simply overworked it. Sometimes that is true, but there are several structures that can produce similar symptoms.
One common problem is an MCL strain. The medial collateral ligament sits along the inner knee and can become injured during sports, falls, or sudden changes in direction.
A medial meniscus tear can also cause pain on the inner side. People may notice clicking, catching, swelling, or discomfort when twisting the knee.
Then there is arthritis. Osteoarthritis can develop gradually and often causes stiffness along with aching pain. Symptoms may become more noticeable when walking for long periods or climbing stairs.
Another possibility is irritation of the tissues below the inner knee, including the pes anserine bursa and tendons.
The first step is paying attention to how the pain started. Was there an injury? Did activity increase recently? Is there swelling? Does the knee lock or feel unstable?
These details can help a healthcare professional understand what may be happening.
For mild symptoms, reducing activities that clearly worsen pain while maintaining comfortable movement may be reasonable. Persistent symptoms, however, deserve proper evaluation.
Understanding the possible causes of inner knee pain can help you avoid assuming that every knee problem has the same solution.
