Coolant Distribution Unit Market Analysis and Emerging Cooling Technologies

As compute density rises, the choices within the coolant distribution unit market are widening. Polaris Market Research values the market at USD 1.50 billion in 2025, with USD 1.80 billion estimated for 2026 and USD 8.14 billion projected for 2034, at a CAGR of 20.70%. This article explains how CDUs work and where the report sees design innovation heading.

How a CDU Works

A CDU consists of two independent hydraulic systems. One connects to the facility chilled water supply, while the other carries treated coolant to servers or tanks. Heat transfers in a plate heat exchanger, with pumps and controls managing temperature and pressure. The secondary loop design aids temperature control and aligns with ASHRAE and OCP recommendations for high-density liquid cooling. Key components include variable-speed pumps, heat exchangers, PLC controls, filtration, and sensors for leak detection.

Commissioning requires integrated air removal, pressure balancing and leak testing.

Fastest-Growing Formats

The in-rack CDU is the fastest-growing type, driven by AI GPU clusters and high-density racks. Placing the unit inside or near the rack shortens the fluid path and allows fine-grained control. Immersion cooling is the fastest-growing cooling technology because full immersion offers improved heat transfer as server density increases.

Polaris compares it with direct-to-chip systems. Immersion offers very high density handling but limited retrofit capability and a higher degree of infrastructure change, whereas direct-to-chip offers moderate retrofit capability and lower infrastructure change.

In-row units, located between racks, balance density and accessibility and see steady adoption in colocation and enterprise sites migrating from air to liquid.

Modular Deployment and Sustainability

Colocation operators are adopting modular CDU solutions that scale with incremental rack deployments, which suits tenants running GPU-intensive workloads. In September 2025, Flex launched a modular rack-level CDU, and Johnson Controls introduced a scalable liquid cooling solution with modular units. In January 2026, DCX introduced an 8 MW CDU for high-density environments.

Sustainability is another opportunity. Liquid cooling improves power usage effectiveness by reducing reliance on air conditioning, and CDUs help simplify waste heat recovery. In January 2026, Data Center Industry Denmark launched the Net-Zero Start-Up Hub in Fredericia to encourage low-carbon data center innovation.

Regional and End-Use Dynamics

High-performance computing is the fastest-growing end use, as scientific modeling and national research initiatives require dense compute clusters. In Europe, energy efficiency limits on PUE are pushing a shift from air to liquid, with in-row units in demand for retrofits. In the Middle East, hot climates favor liquid cooling and floor-mounted designs in large greenfield sites. In Asia Pacific, Nokia expects India’s 5G subscribers to reach 770 million by 2028, up from 290 million in 2024.

Operationally, leak detection, redundancy design, pump calibration and careful commissioning are now central to long-term stability.

CDUs introduce hydraulic engineering into data center operations, so architecture decisions made today directly shape efficiency and expansion economics.

Hybrid, Edge and Enterprise Use Cases

Hybrid air-to-liquid systems, including rear-door heat exchangers, let operators adopt liquid cooling step by step without major architectural changes. Enterprise data centers use CDUs selectively, mainly where quick analytics or on-premises AI infrastructure is needed, and financial constraints moderate the pace. Edge data centers are a niche but expanding segment where real estate limits and local compute needs favor compact designs such as in-rack and portable units.

Portable units are growing rapidly in test labs and early liquid-cooled rollouts, while static systems remain dominant in fixed environments. Polaris also sees greater alignment with ASHRAE and OCP guidance reducing integration friction and shortening deployment cycles.
